The Yap

My time was VERY fragmented this week, so it was hard to just sit down and do this. It’s a bit of a stage behind, but this is all I have at the moment. This was my first time using acrylics (and painting in general) ever, so I was dealing with all of the growing pains that came with learning a new medium. It was hard to see a lot, so I used my iPhone’s flashlight in the other hand. My underdrawing was much more accurate to the reference, but I had to do some inferences because I just couldn’t see it anymore.

The major issue I had with this was the paint drying too fast. I have no idea how to revive it or if I can, and I’m not really sure how to keep my palette for later sessions. The majority of the time, I was mixing colors and trying to figure out what I did last time, which is kinda why I didn’t progress that much this week.

Questions

  1. I’m trying to be conservative with my paint, so how in the world do I keep it from drying so fast?
  2. How would you recommend I practice brush strokes so I can avoid the hairy/fluffy edges?
  3. Is it possible to preserve a palette across multiple days? I’m going crazy with all the mixing and remixing.
  4. What are some tips for thinning the paint? I try to put a bit of water, but it’s either still too thick or way too thin. I know it’s not going to be the same as oils, but currently, it’s either a splotch or nonexistent (just look at the chair).
  5. My color is always slightly off from what I want (or had), and I struggle a lot with trying to narrow it down. Not sure how to frame it, but what do I do about that?

Several ounces of paint were sacrificed for this.
