In this Zoom lesson, students will be guided through the process of creating an oil underpainting based on Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres’s Portrait of Pauline de Broglie. The focus of the session will be on establishing a strong structural and value foundation that will effectively support subsequent paint layers.
The demonstration will cover the complete oil underpainting process on a gessoed sheet of four-ply illustration board, which has been pre-tinted with acrylic paint. Emphasis will be placed on accurate proportion, simplified shape design, and clear value organization, following principles central to Ingres’s approach to form, clarity, and refinement.
Students will learn how to create a clean, intentional underpainting that serves as a roadmap for later stages of the painting process. Topics will include controlling value relationships, unifying forms, and preparing the surface for the application of more developed color and edge work.
