Pauline de Broglie Underdrawing – Ingres Master Study

In this Zoom lesson, students will be guided through the process of creating an underdrawing based on Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres’s Portrait of Pauline de Broglie. The focus of the session will be on establishing a strong structural foundation before the introduction of paint.

The demonstration will cover the complete underdrawing process on a gessoed sheet of four-ply illustration board, which has been pre-tinted with acrylic paint. Emphasis will be placed on accurate proportion, simple shape design, and clear value organization, following principles evident in Ingres’s approach to form and clarity.

Students will learn how to build a clean, intentional underdrawing that supports later stages of painting, including how to simplify complex forms, establish major relationships, and maintain cohesion throughout the image.

This lesson is designed to reinforce disciplined observation and thoughtful preparation as essential components of a successful finished work.
