In this Zoom lesson, students will be guided through the process of creating a final painting based on Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres’s Portrait of Pauline de Broglie. The focus of the session will be on bringing the painting to a resolved state while making thoughtful decisions about what areas should be fully developed versus left more painterly.
The demonstration will take place on a gessoed sheet of four-ply illustration board, pre-tinted with acrylic paint, and will emphasize efficient workflow, accurate proportion, and clear value organization. Particular attention will be given to prioritizing focal areas and managing time effectively within the structure of a live Zoom class.
Students will learn how to selectively refine sections of the painting while allowing secondary areas to remain loose and suggestive, reinforcing hierarchy, clarity, and visual interest. The lesson will also address how painterly passages can coexist with more finished areas without compromising cohesion.
This lesson is designed to reinforce disciplined observation, intentional decision-making, and strategic use of time as essential components of a successful final painting.
