In this lesson, students will complete a master study of Baking the Bread by Anders Zorn, focusing on composition, value structure, and limited-palette color harmony. The goal of this study is not to create an exact copy, but to understand Zorn’s painterly decision-making, economy of means, and mastery of value and temperature using a restrained palette.
The process will begin with a composition study, in which students analyze the overall design of the painting. Emphasis will be placed on identifying the dominant value masses, the placement of figures within the space, and the balance of light and dark shapes. This step encourages students to think holistically about the image before addressing detail.
Next, students will develop a carefully observed underdrawing, focusing on accurate proportions, gesture, and structural relationships. The underdrawing will establish the foundation of the painting, clarifying the major forms while avoiding unnecessary detail.
Following the drawing, students will execute a sepia-toned underpainting to block in the large shapes and establish the value relationships of the composition. This stage prioritizes simplification, allowing students to focus on light, shadow, and form without the complexity of full color. The underpainting will serve as a value map and guide for the final layers.
Once the underpainting is resolved, students will complete the final painting using a limited four-color palette: burnt sienna, burnt umber, ivory black, and titanium white. Through this restrained palette, students will explore temperature shifts, edge control, and subtle color variation while maintaining strong value structure. Attention will be given to Zorn’s expressive brushwork, lost-and-found edges, and the interaction between warm and cool passages.
By the end of the lesson, students will gain a deeper understanding of Zorn’s approach to realism, the effectiveness of limited palettes, and the importance of disciplined, sequential painting methods in building a cohesive and expressive work.
