In this class, we’ll explore how to simplify a complex landscape, taking inspiration from the work of painter Maynard Dixon. Dixon’s landscapes convey depth and atmosphere through thoughtful use of value, shape, and color.

Our focus will be on transforming complexity into clarity. Often, it’s not just about what you include in a drawing—but what you choose to leave out. Learning to be selective is a valuable skill for any artist.

Today, we’ll be shading solid shapes, so please use a softer pencil. I’ll also be demonstrating with a brush and a kneaded eraser during our session.
