Here is a snow scene where I used the “reference” palette with the gray scale and then in blue using ultramarine as the mid tone and adding white for lighter tones and the black/umber for the darks.
I am confused that the ultramarine from the tub does not really look mid tone to me. I used a little white to lighten it a bit and I think I may have added a little dark to make it look more like the value 5 on the gray scale.
I worked on matching tones on the painting and realize the sky needs more blending and the distant mountains need more shape and variety on the right side before I add the trees.
Do you think the stream would make a stronger composition if it was wider in the foreground? I’m thinking yes because the front snow bank shape feels wrong.
