Watercolour Portrait of a Young Man

Connor for Critique

Hi Matt, this is Caitlin. I got your email about the technical issues and wasn’t sure whether I needed to upload again or not, so here it is again just in case.

Do you remember my portrait of the older lady from a couple of weeks ago? I made the changes you recommended and it was received with great enthusiasm! I have been asked to do another, this is Connor.

I was given two photo references, neither ideal in themselves. I used the face from the left picture as it had a nicer smile. The shirt is from the right picture. For the rendering of the face I looked at the left photo in terms of where the shadows are, but tried to match values from the right photo because the light was better. It’s tricky!

The painting is nearly done. I want to play a bit more with the eye sockets, the rendering of the nose and the lower face/jaw area. If you could give me guidance for those that would be great. Please also let me know if there’s any other adjustments that need doing.

For scale, the head is 3 inches.

Thanks very much
