This is my latest pastel painting. I know the first thing you will say: “The photo reference is terrible!” Yes, I know. Guilty as charged.
So, why did I choose to wing it and use a bad reference photo? 1) I’m trying to learn more how to draw from imagination, so the winging it part helps with that. 2) I’m interested in a very specific subject matter, namely how physically looking up or raising the head affects the body and mind. 3) Diversity is very important to me, so I wanted to draw a person of color. But I’m working on learning to take my own pictures. In the meantime, though, I’m at the mercy of “Unsplash” and “Pixabay”. Hence, the bad reference photo.
All that aside, what thoughts do you have about color, composition and anatomy? Or anything else that you might like to comment on?
Thank you in advance – your advice is always great!
