Gravitate: Gaze: Up (Sheila)

Hi Matt,

This is my latest pastel painting. I know the first thing you will say: “The photo reference is terrible!” Yes, I know. Guilty as charged. ¬†

So, why did I choose to wing it and use a bad reference photo? 1) I’m trying to learn more how to draw from imagination, so the winging it part helps with that. 2) I’m interested in a very specific subject matter, namely how ¬†physically looking up or raising the head affects the body and mind. 3) Diversity is very important to me, so I wanted to draw a person of color. But I’m working on learning to take my own pictures. In the meantime, though, I’m at the mercy of “Unsplash” and “Pixabay”. Hence, the bad reference photo.¬†

All that aside, what thoughts do you have about color, composition and anatomy? Or anything else that you might like to comment on?

Thank you in advance – your advice is always great!
