Hi Matt, this is Caitlin.
I’m still working on paintings from my travels, this one is from a photo taken near Monschau, Germany.
While thinking about composition I changed a few things compared to the reference:
– I moved the trees (near and far) a bit away from the figure so that it would show up more against the sky.
– I made the coat red, further focusing on the figure as the focal point.
– I did less contrast and duller colours on the rock and moss. When painted like the photo I found it drew more attention than I liked.
The darks in the painting are deeper in real life, do you have any tips on editing in photoshop to make it closer to the original?
