Forest Lookout near Monschau

Hi Matt, this is Caitlin.

I’m still working on paintings from my travels, this one is from a photo taken near Monschau, Germany.

While thinking about composition I changed a few things compared to the reference:

 – I moved the trees (near and far) a bit away from the figure so that it would show up more against the sky.

 – I made the coat red, further focusing on the figure as the focal point.

 – I did less contrast and duller colours on the rock and moss. When painted like the photo I found it drew more attention than I liked.

The darks in the painting are deeper in real life, do you have any tips on editing in photoshop to make it closer to the original?

All critique welcome.

Thank you
