Figure painting

Hi Matt,

i kind of regretted choosing this reference, at least at a small scale, once i got going because of the face and right hand. The face and hand are pretty tiny so they’ll have to be unrendered shapes.  Theyre pretty complicated so close together, so i decreased the value of the hand to promote the face; if I simplified the hand too much it seemed like the fingers didnt really look like fingers anymore. Keeping the highlights on the hand in particular became very confusing. Now the values are so close they’re pretty much indistinguishable from the shoulder and the face is fine i suppose. I guess i could try distinguishing them with color but i suspect that if it’s different from the rest of the skin it’ll become too much the focus. How would you advise dealing with this?
