In this class, we explore the Loomis method for drawing portraits. We begin by practicing several portrait views using the technique in its purest form.

Next, we incorporate the Loomis method with angular shapes to define the hair. Building on that structure, we then draw the line that separates light from shadow, layering it over the Loomis framework.

To wrap up, I share a technique I’ve used for years called the “Two Ovals” method. This was a really enjoyable class, and I believe the key takeaway for most students is that it’s more effective to combine elements from different techniques rather than relying solely on one.

In my experience, the Loomis method can sometimes result in stiff drawings. That’s why I find it most useful when combined with light and shadow techniques—it brings more life and flexibility to the portrait.
