    Hi Matt,

I’m copying some Raphael and Waterhouse drawings to practice convex lines and further refine my portraiture skills. These artists use several materials, and since I struggle a bit with the materials to use to achieve a similar effect as in the originals, I would like to ask you about these different mediums. It says ‘chalk on paper’ or ‘charcoal’ or ‘graphite’. As far as I can find on the internet, ‘chalk’ as used by f.i. Waterhouse is not the same as ‘pastel’ (or ‘chalk pastel’). Do you know what this ‘chalk’ is supposed to look like, then and now? Or would your advice be to just use pastel pencils and/or charcoal (sticks/pencils)? I would like to try something else besides the col erase, for that doesn’t quite work like I would like it to.

Interesting question. I’ve no idea but to me pastels are more pigmented than chalk. I hope to hear an answer on tomorrow’s podcast. 🙂
