    Hi Matt, (and community)

I am curious to hear about your thoughts regarding drawing from observation vs drawing via construction (aka from imagination).

I’ve followed some of your material where you paint out it is important to draw from life, from photos and from imagination.

To make my questions more concrete, let’s say someone is interested in improving their portrait and figure drawing skills when using a reference. How should they go about this in terms of construction or observation ? Should they focus on drawing a lot from observation first (seeing shapes of value and measuring accurately), or should they be working on construction (learning the planes of the face, the Asaro head, drawing a mannequin from simple 3D shapes) and then fitting the features on top of that?

I understand that drawing from imagination is all about construction, but what about drawing from reference?

    Thanks !
    Dimitrios
