In the last Member Critique (December 18, 2017) you talk about a three value study while looking at Paul’s drawing of the cat (which you also posted to YouTube). You talk about the 3 value study all the time – so I know it’s important! I notice that you talk about this especially when color is involved. So my question is this, when you are preparing for a painting (or any medium using color) how do you go about doing the value study? Do you complete an individual value study independent of the final piece that you use as reference? Do you do the value study as an under-painting? Do you use a monochromatic paint layer (like a grisaille)?
