    Hi Matt,

Lately as I’ve been posting my paintings on social media more and more I’ve been contacted by different people to paint portraits of them or their friends. While I’m truly grateful for it, it also made me realize that I have no intention of spending my time painting people that I don’t even know. The purpose of those paintings of random models is mostly to improve my technical skills but it is by no means what I plan on doing for the rest of my life.

I feel like I’m investing my time in the wrong practices, using these studies as an excuse to procrastinate on designing my own characters, waiting to achieve some kind of technical mastery before starting out. Just because it’s easier to paint what is in front of you rather than combining a variety of ideas to produce something new.

So what do you think I should do to start moving away from these simple copies and get back on track to designing my own characters? How would you go about designing a character?

    Thank you,
    Alan
