I gave my thoughts on your question in this week’s podcast.
Working on top of a black and white underpainting is an option. The only issue I have with it is that you loose the ability to use layers of translucent color. Translucent color from the base layer.
This is where you use the white of your broad to glow through to the final layer.
Of course the old masters glazed over a monochromatic underpainting with color. However that technique can create dark grey paintings.
